No More Peanut Butter Sandwiches--a review
A BOOK THAT HAS STAYED WITH ME FOR WEEKS AND WEEKS
I was so happy to be able to review No More Peanut Butter Sandwiches, by Jeff Davidson (currently available at http://www.amazon.com/No-More-Peanut-Butter-Sandwiches/dp/1633570010).
This book is an honest story from a dad whose son was born with special needs. Jeff Davidson was expecting a healthy boy with whom he could play basketball and teach to drive a car. But his precious son, Jon Alex, was born with cerebral palsy and autism. He is nonverbal and needs help to eat and dress.
This book is meant to benefit other parents of special needs children, and especially to encourage dads to care for their wives and participate in their children's lives.
I didn't really know what to expect as I began this book, but I grew so much in my understanding of special needs individuals and their families. There were so many things that I didn't know or hadn't thought about, and I feel very inspired and changed. This book helped to deepen my theology, open my eyes to particular needs of others, and uplift my spirit. Jon Alex is an amazing gift and someone I would love to meet someday!
I think that the book held up well Biblically and theologically, and I thought to myself that God must be pleased at the investment the Davidsons are making in each other, their own spiritual growth, and the special needs community. I wanted to attend one of their special needs church services to see it firsthand!
From dark days to joyful discoveries, practical help to spiritual insight, Davidson had so much to say. I checked out his blog, www.risingabove.com, and that was well worth the visit.
Okay, as requested, here are the negatives that I need to write. The book could have used some further editing. It had some organizational issues as well as some redundancy ones. There were a couple of places where I thought, "Didn't he just say that?" Another person or two looking at it, objectively and carefully, might have helped clean some of that up. I also was not a giant fan of the cover. The artwork grew on me, but I thought the writing was dark and kind of hard to read at first glance. I think it may have been better to use fewer fonts, and to size and place them a little differently. So, if the book is reprinted at the end of this run, and Davidson ever sees this review, it might be beneficial to change the word fonts, size and placement for clearer readability.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants a deeper understanding of caring for a family with special needs.
